Founders Commentary for September, 2005

from Derrick Walker

Greetings friends and supporters of the Alternative Medicine Referral Network;

August was a fantastic month for us! The Alternative Medicine Referral Network was represented at the American Naturopathic Medical Association show in Las Vegas. Additionally, the Anti-Aging Congress had a very successful tradeshow over the weekend of August 19-21 in Chicago. From the reports I have heard, this was the largest attendance for the anti-aging event. I also attended several workshops, including Cindy Shuster's "Belly Wisdom - Own your own Greatness Intensive" at Awakenings bookstore in Laguna Beach, CA. and was very impressed with the material covered and Cindy's teaching on living an 'authentic life'. If you are fortunate enough to be in town when she speaks or gives a workshop, I encourage you to attend. You will learn a great deal... about yourself! We will be sending out information to members on how to enter a drawing for Cindy Shuster's "Belly Wisom" CD. I also had the rare pleasure of hearing Dr. Julian Whitaker of the Whitaker Wellness Institute speak. It was very inspiring and was a great reminder of how much of a role our choices play in every aspect of our health.

AMRN has just signed on a sponsor who will be doing testing with a device that can tell us how effective our anti-oxidant level is along with how well our supplement use is working. I took this quick 3-minute test and scored well, however there is room for improvement. There will be more information on this and how to obtain a test for yourself during the coming weeks. Please check back on our website or call 1.866.890.0970.

We are also working to make the Alternative Medicine Referral Network more "user friendly" and get our referral clients more quickly in touch with practitioners and clinics. There is a feature we will be adding to cross-connect those with questions directly with a therapist. This feature should be implemented during September.

I feel as though we are at the flash-point of what I call a "Revolution in Wellness". This has taken root in the national consciousness and I see it through people who call our referral line, visits to holistic clinics and simply day-to-day contact. More people than ever are seeking to be truly "Well", and are willing to make lifestyle changes. I ask that more of us continue to share our experiences with others so more people may benefit.

We got a call from a young woman in New York state who asked for my assistant, Leslie. Leslie was not available so I took the call. As it turns out, this woman was diagnosed with breast cancer and was calling to give a very emotional 'thank you' to Leslie for referring her to one of our holistic doctors. Through the treatments she has received, not only is her cancer in remission, but she has developed a very positive outlook via the emotional and spiritual counseling she has received. I was sincerely touched by this call and asked for a testimonial letter.

I strongly urge anyone who is suffering with a health issue or who has a relative or friend who is looking for deeper answers to their health issues to look into alternative medicine. This should not preempt any other measures you are already taking through your traditional physician, but it is an avenue that should be explored. As we are seeing in our lifetime, more and more traditional medicine is merging with alternative medicine and I think this will keep us all healthier for a longer time.

The use of alternative therapies is increasing.

Nearly two-thirds of American adults use some form of complementary or alternative medicine ranging from prayer to herbs, a U.S. government survey showed. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted the survey of 31,000 U.S. adults, asking about 27 types of therapies such as acupuncture and chiropractic, the use of herbs or botanical products, special diets, and megavitamin therapy. About 36 percent of those surveyed said they had used one or more of those approaches. When prayer was considered, the number rose to 62 percent. Women, people with higher education, those who had been hospitalized within the past year and former smokers were all more likely to use complementary or alternative approaches, the survey found.

We are a resource for those seeking health answers.
With more people than ever seeking information on alternative medicine and receiving treatments from alternative practitioners, we formed the Alternative Medicine Referral Network to be a resource for the general public to connect with licensed, certified and pre-screened holistic practitioners.

Quote of the Month - October, 2005

"Diet is the essential key to all successful healing. Without a proper balanced diet, the effectiveness of herbal treatment is very limited. With the appropriate eliminative or balanced diet, herbal treatment will prove itself to be effective where no medicine will work and will often be faster than the quick but temporary relief of Western drugs."
